Steve Gome is an actor-lawyer based in Naarm (Melbourne). For this portrait I asked Gome to select a character from his repertoire and to perform it at a favourite rehearsal place. In this solo performance Gome chose the setting of the Fitzroy Gardens to revel in embodying the character of Arturo Ui from Bertholt Brecht’s “The Resistable Rise of Arturo Ui”. I asked him why he chose to play this character? He replied ‘I wanted to answer the brief of transforming from a pedestrian self into performance. This particular monologue is about me as an actor, playing a character who is playing a character while addressing a crowd’.
